finding other navigation apps

I wanted to see what another navigation apps were out there, to see how they were set up; I found websites explaining there best apps and videos expelling how the apps worked. most if not all of the apps are on road navigation rater then navigation within buildings but it still gave me ideas on how others set out there navigation apps.

http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/6-navigation-apps-that-go-the-extra-mile.php
and
http://gizmodo.com/5656790/the-best-navigation-apps
are both websites that had what they believed were the best narration apps around for smart phones and tablets, these apps were designed to help the user to get from one place to another, some tell you the fastest route and others give an update on what is happening on the road so helps you to choose the most efficient route to take to avoid things like road works, traffic or cop stops.

from this I went and found videos on some of the apps, to see how they tried to sell there product:
waze is an app were it relies on the users to help each other on the road, you can tell other users were traffic is and why it is being held up, even the map is set up by people diving down the road with the app on, people can change the name on roads and streets if they are spelt wrong, this app is based around the people that use it.

I also looked google maps an iPhone as it is the most common navigation app around

I found that google maps was easy to use with the use of gestures to move around and zoom in and out. Also it had different settings which the user can choose to depend on their preference. I also liked their graphics it the way that it gave the sense that the page lifted up to change the settings. the last thing that I liked about google maps was the fact that if you have your internet on it can work out were you are and find you the best route yo take form your current location.

I also found a website that had invented a way to help people find there way through a building http://www.mobilemag.com/2012/05/07/indoor-sensor-allows-navigation-inside-buildings/
this way people can find there way through building on different levels.

Kelburn

I felt that I should look at how the Keburn campus was set up so in what better way to do that but look up the map, the map seems pretty strait forward but its a different story when you are up there as this map does not show it in a 3d form. Like most of Wellington keburn is based on a hill so when entering different parts of the uni you will appear on different levels, so when you think your on ground floor in one building your on the second level in another. So when making this app I want it to seem easier to define what level you are on.

write up

This model I wanted to focus on touch and the different textures that different objects give off. In showing this I wanted to put a wide range of substances into a malleable casings so they give off a wide variety of feelings without being able to recognise what the object is. I wanted to focus on the idea of touch rather than sight to identify a common household item so this sense of the user could be strengthen. The whole creation is a box to give off the sense of mystery and contrast. Mystery in the sense that you cannot tell what is enclosed, as every ‘window’ looks identical and contrast with the use of colour and malleability; as the rubber is white and the card is black showing that they are used for different purposes of the model, the card is used for support, while the rubber is used to be poked and prodded by the user to experience the different textures the objects give off.

Instruction
The main purpose of this model is to enhance the use of touch as inside this interactive object the windows hold different substances that gives of a different sensation, some may even trigger pervious memories. I want the user to feel comfortable to explore the different textures felt from the objects enclosed; they can push down with one finger on the white rubber or their whole hand.  The user should not be afraid to lift the box up and push the sections from both sides at the same time or turn it on its side or even feel different sections at the same time. The box is for the user to experience touch, as everyone experiences things differently this model has been created with no right or wrong way to use it, as long as the user feels a new sensation from it, then it will be used correctly.

changing the design

I felt that I wanted to expand on the idea of flattening out the rubber by putting it in a grid so that I could put the different substances under each of the squares, In this I pulled out two balloons to create this.

with this I wanted to make it into a box were you could fell the textures on different sides of the box. so it was easier to feel the textures the objects give off.

to trial this I placed one of the balloons inside to see if it worked, and it did you could still feel the objects enclosed but now had the support of the card and don't have the iconic shape of the balloons.

i felt that if I wanted to make this into a actual model I had to get a bigger piece of rubber, so I found a shop off Cuba St that sold large balloons so I bought a 'small' and a 'medium" of the lager balloons. I felt that if I used these instead of the normal sized ones they wouldn't pull as much as the normal ones ashen starched out and would be thicker then them too.

Testing

I felt that I should get someone who had never felt the balloons before to see there reaction on the different substances. I found that it was quite hard to figure out what was in the balloons but I didn't really want the substances to be recognisable, I wanted the user to focus on the texture of the objects rater then what the actual objects are, I want the user to see what different objects felt like when they are incised in a set spaces and you all you have to identify it is the touch.

Pulling the rubber out

I felt that I could try move away for the look of round balloons, I felt that it didn't push my abilities with design as the shape of the balloon was iconic and my work I didn't wasn't it to focus on balloons but the rubber the balloons that they are made of. I like that they are very malleable, fixable and a good material to feel the textures and destines of the objects inclosed inside.

so I decided to pull the rubber into sheets, In doing this i came across a few problems; I found that the only way to attach the rubber to the card was to double sided tape it to the card, as glue wouldn't stick and nailing or shaping it would of made the rubber rip, I also had to use card as double sided tape won't stick to wood or plastic. the last problem I came across was the thickness of the card as the thiner card bent under the presser of the rubber wanting to pull back to its rest state.

I found that 2mm card was the best to work with as it was strong enough to hold the force of the rubber and was still easy enough to cut into shape

Putting the rubber balls together

I wanted to try to bring the balls together so the user can feel all the objects at the same time, so i tried this in two different ways

First i got normal sized balloons and filled them with different substances then i put them in a stocking I felt that a stocking would allow the user to feel the texture of the substances but still hold the balloons with in it.

second I wanted to try make a smaller one so in doing so I got the same substances like flour or rice and put them in smaller balloons such as water balloons and them putting them all in a normal sized balloons. I found it hare to fill the smaller balloons to full then the larger ones at the shape of them have been designed differently so when I try to put the objects inside it doesn't blow up as well as the lager on and gives off a different shape. when inserting the small balloons into the larger on I infatuated the lager before I tied it, I felt that it give it a bit of air around the balloons meant that there was more room to feel the different textures. I felt that the second model worked better then the first as it gave off a better feel and look then the first, you cant see what is inclosed in it and is more unexpected what you would touch.

story board

200 words

This model I want to focus on touch and the different textures that different object give off. In showing this I wanted to put a wide range of objects in to a malleable casing so they give of a vide variety of textures with out being able to recognise what the object is so all you have to work out what the object is inside the malleable casing is the texture. I felt that rubber balloons are the best objects to use for this model as is easy to full up with different substances and thin enough for the different textures to be felt.
In the rubber case I want to use objects such as; flour, corn flour, water, rice and salt as they all have different densities and textures. As the layout of the model I want it the textures to be felt as a whole and as individuals so I want all of the rubber cases to be lined up one by one in a square so the user can run their whole hand across all the balloons and feel the different densities of the balloons. Also the user can touch the balloons individually to feel the difference between the other textures of the surrounding balloons have.

mock ups

i felt i needed to try different substances in the rubber balloons to see what the out come would be. I tried corn flour, flour, rice, water, air and salt, some came out better then others and they all came out different sizes so i will have to try make them the same size next time.

As I want to put all the balls in an arrangement of a square I felt i should make a mock up of it, I need to find a way to keep the balls standing up right as they are all different weights some fall over while others stand up strait.

developments

I liked the idea of the texture of what different substances in balloons so i developed the ideas on the different ways i could construct it.

trying different ways to crate a casing on the balloons but felt that it wasn't needed as you couldn't feel the textures if they were incesed

concepts 112

112 DSND

On the first day of 112 I brought in five different items for the different sences I took:
  • Raro for taste as when it it powder it doesn't give off any visual appearance so all you have to work off is the taste.
  • rice in a container for sound as it makes a nice rapid sound when tipped around, gives of the feeling of rain
  • cush ball for touch as the object it design for touch with the strange texture
  • blue food colouring for sight as something so small can change so meany items, so can change the appearance of objects.
  • Vicks for smell, the strong smelling object is good object for smell as this object is designed to use when people have colds to help clear up the nose.
on the next class we had to bring in an interactive and useful objects, I bought in:

Playdough for interactive: because it i really enjoy the way that you get to chose what you can create and every person makes everything differently.

sandpaper block for useful object as i like the texture that sand paper gives off
